Entrepreneur Profile
Maria Margarita is making her comeback.
Three years ago she started a sheep-raising business with a single lamb and over time grew her flock to seven but, due to pressing family needs she had to sell off the sheep. But she realized that this activity is a good source of income because she was able to cover some expenses, especially in feeding and educating their children.
She is now ready to raise sheep again and needs a loan to buy three sheep. She hopes that with a little support, the sheep can provide enough for their four children to have no limitations because she knows that with hard work and dedication to her family, they will not suffer all the shortcomings that she suffered.
Mid-Term Update - April 18, 2010
Maria Margarita decided that it would be better to not invest in sheep, and invest in a small grocery store instead. She did this because her sheep started to die, and she felt like she would run less of a risk using the loan to invest in the grocery store. With her loan, she bought sugar, oil, cookies, flour, etc. She says that it has been hard for her to keep up with the payments because she hasn't been earning as much as she hoped. Nevertheless, she is going to keep working hard and she thanks you for your continued support.
Final Report - June 17, 2010
Maria Margarita says that her grocery store business has been doing okay. She states, "I can't complain about how my business has been doing. I am grateful to have it as an extra source of income while God still sees it fit to have me on this earth." Her biggest desire for the future is to help her four children get ahead so they don't have to suffer. She would like them to become teachers.
Maria is finished repaying her loan.
Local Community
Home to a primarily ethnic Mazahua population, the community of Najhé is located in a mountainous region in northeastern Mexico State. The climate is sub-humid, but temperatures are typically cool due to the region’s high elevation. Windstorms are common during the early spring, followed by heavy rains in the summer and frost in the winter.
Women in Najhé continue to wear typical Mazahua dress, and some community members uphold traditional artisan practices, producing pottery, woodwork, and crafts made of wool. The primary economic activity is agriculture. Squash, beans, and fruit are grown for consumption, while corn is grown both to eat and to sell.
World Vision’s work in Najhé includes agricultural assistance to improve nutrition and family incomes; vocational training and tutoring sessions; and self-esteem workshops. We are also working to improve health conditions by training volunteers who can educate community members and by providing housing materials that will contribute to better living environments.
