Srey is from Cambodia. She needs a loan of $250 to buy fertilizer and pesticides.
Srey is a farmer who grows rice and vegetables as her main source of income. She also fishes in order to supplement that income and better provide for her family. However, despite her hard work, even the combined income from her two businesses is not enough to meet all of her large family's basic needs. Unfortunately, this led her to have to borrow a high interest loan from a local money lender.
With a loan for World Vision, Srey will be able to buy fertilizer and pesticides for her farm. This will increase her harvest yield and help her make enough money to avoid becoming indebted to the local money lender, as well as reinvest in her business and cover her family's expenses. She hopes that this boost will help her expand her current businesses and also wants to create a new business when she has the ability to do so in order to secure her financial stability. This stability will then give her the opportunity to hire others from her community to help her run her businesses.
The additional income she will bring in from her increased produce and rice sales will allow Srey to better the living conditions for the whole family. She is also focused on providing sufficient food her four children so that they may grow healthy and strong, and cover all of their educational expenses so that they will have the hope of a brighter future.
The Agriculture business sector covers all farming and livestock activities. Some entrepreneurs request loans to help in securing supplies and equipment. Others want to buy more animals to breed or purchase feed and medicines. The majority of our loan clients live in rural communities where agriculture is already understood as a business model. It is for this reason that approximately 50% of our loans are in the agricultural sector.
More than 56,000 people make their home in Cambodia’s Leuk Daek district. Located in Kandal province, improvements are needed in social services, healthcare, schools, and roads. Agriculture is the main source of family income, yet 37 percent of the population experiences food shortages for more than four months of the year.
World Vision established the Leuk Daek Area Development Program in 2000. Accomplishments include helping families establish home gardens, teaching farmers new agricultural methods, immunizing children, constructing calverts, and supporting a canal renovation. These changes have helped the Cambodian people to begin making improvements in their lives.
The World Vision-affiliated VisionFund Cambodia microfinance institution does things like educate entrepreneurs about microfinance, disburse loans, and manage repayments. This gives impoverished rural people a chance to back away from local moneylenders and begin sustainable employment opportunities.
