Fabiola is 33 years old and has a junior high-school education. She is a single mother and has one son, Jorge, who is 10 years old and is attending elementary school. Fabiola lives in the community of Vicente, an important sugar cane-producing area. They live near the company Ingenio La Margarita, where many people in the state of Oaxaca are employed making sugar. Fabiola has worked hard all her life, but the moment she became a mother she knew she had to make a greater effort in order to give her son a better life.
Fabiola has always been a trader. She started out selling clothing and recently decided to sell cosmetics from a catalog. She visits her family and friends to sell the products, and realizes that selling beauty products is a profitable activity for which the demand is always growing. With this loan, Fabiola will buy more cosmetics and several perfumes to show as samples and eventually to resell to her customers. She expects that this increase in inventory will help her to improve her business so that she can provide her son with better opportunities and a good education.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
The community of Vincente Camalote is located in the state of Oaxaca, about two hours from the city of Tierra Blanca. The climate is warm and the landscape is lush and green.
