Lucero is from Mexico. She has 2 children. She needs a loan of $400 to buy glasses, plates, spoons and many other products.
Lucero is 26 years old and has an elementary school education. She is married to Miguel Ángel and they have two children: Citlaly who is 8 and Carolina who is 7 years old. Both of the children are attending elementary school. The family lives in the community of Tetela in Comitancillo, where many people grow sugar cane. It is 20 minutes from La Margarita Refinery which is a principal producer of sugar in the state of Oaxaca. Lucero sells plastic molds for plates, glasses and other items by catalog. She started selling molds 3 months ago as a way to help her husband out with the household expenses. She wants her daughters to be able to continue studying, and she does not want Miguel Angel to bear all their financial responsibilities.
Lucero sales her plastic molds by visiting neighbors' and friends' homes. She shows her catalogs, writes down the models her customers select and then orders them. When the molds arrive, she goes back to the houses to deliver the products and to get paid. Lucero needs the loan in order to buy new catalogs. She also wants to buy plastic articles like plates, glasses, and vases to show as samples when she visits the homes. Lucero will use the money from the loan to improve her business with the goal of building a better life for her children.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
The community of Vincente Camalote is located in the state of Oaxaca, about two hours from the city of Tierra Blanca. The climate is warm and the landscape is lush and green. Many residents participate in agriculture, primarily harvesting sugar cane. Other economic activities include commerce and fishing.
World Vision is working to improve the health of families in Vincente Camalote by providing housing materials for the improvement of living spaces; restoring water tanks for access to clean water; and supporting medical treatment and HIV- and AIDS-awareness campaigns. We are also supporting education by training teachers and tutors and providing spiritual-formation workshops for teens.
