Theresie runs a business selling goods such as beans, sorghum, cooking oil, sugar, salt and soap. She is challenged by not having enough capital to run her business properly.
Theresie will use the loan from World Vision to purchase more goods for resale. She hopes to become financially stable and eventually to buy a motorcycle to help her and her business.
A stable business and increased profits will improve life for Theresie and her family. She will be able to pay the school fees for her children and for medical insurance for her family, as well as save for the future. Theresie also hopes that a growing business will create jobs for others in her community.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
Mudasomwa is a densely populated rural community in Rwanda. Families in this area grow crops such as sorghum, sweet potatoes, beans, and bananas. Soil quality is poor, and many families keep livestock simply to have manure to use as fertilizer.
Some homes have roofs made of iron sheets or tiles, while others are simply thatched with grass. Widows and children often live in homes with damaged walls and leaking roofs. Many children in this community live alone or care for younger siblings and are unable to attend school. Insufficient diets, unclean water, and lack of sanitary toilets and sinks increase the prevalence of diseases, including malaria, worms, and malnutrition. Health facilities in the area do not have enough supplies or staff to adequately serve the community.
World Vision is working to improve life for community members in Mudasomwa by providing vocational training, school supplies, healthcare, health education, food assistance, seeds and fertilizers, livestock, and water tanks.

Theresie has been repaying her loan on time with her new profits. She makes weekly payments of $26.
In addition to repaying her loan, Theresie is using additional income to purchase food for the family, expand the current business, and provide healthcare.

While Theresie Nyirandikubwimana initially invested in her business loan by purchasing to purchase more goods for resale, she has struggled to repay her loan. While we continued to work with Marceline to help her reestablish her business, we regret to report that Marceline has now defaulted on her loan.
Theresie prays that she will someday be able to restart her business so that she can better provide for her family. Theresie would like to sincerely thank all donors who partnered with her. Please pray for Theresie and her family during this difficult time.
Despite the fact that World Vision boasts a repayment rate greater than 98%, there will always be some loans that do not get fully repaid. While World Vision does everything it can to ensure that this does not happen, it is an unfortunate reality that must be recognized when providing loans to less fortunate populations.
