Catalina's Story

Catalina is 34 years old. She only studied up to 3rd grade of elementary school because her parents didn’t have enough money to buy her all the things she needed. She also had many brothers and her father worked in the field and didn’t make enough money to put them all in school. Catalina was born and raised on the community of Donaciano Ojeda; she has been making ocoshal crafts for 5 years now. She makes earrings, jars, fruit bowls, etc. She started doing this because she needed a way to help her son and to pay for her education. She sells her crafts all other the country, traveling to town fairs in Michoacán, Mexico City, Puebla, Queretaro, Guanajuato and others. Catalina is asking for a loan to buy thread, needles, soap, tubs, bleacher and detergent to clean the ocoshal.

Catalina has requested a loan from World Vision in order to help her buy the materials needed to make her crafts. Her goal is to start an avocado orchard on her backyard so she can have another source of income to provide a better quality of life to her children.

Catalina wants to provide a proper quality of education to her granddaughter and hopes that with this investment her business will succeed, her income will increase, and her granddaughter will have a bright future.

Industry Info

Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.

Catalina's Community

Crecencio Morales is a mountainous community that is home to an indigenous population of approximately 8,000. Elder members of the population still speak the Mazahua indigenous languages and weave traditional clothing.

Residents of Crecencio Morales live in poverty, depending primarily on agriculture, commerce, and the production of artisan goods for income. Most homes are made of wood and have only two rooms with dirt floors. Families cook their meals on wood stoves, as gas and electricity are limited. Few residents have access to toilets or running water; most use outhouses and fetch water from community wells.

In Crecencio Morales, World Vision is providing families with business training; helping farmers increase agricultural production and incomes; attending to the health needs of malnourished children; increasing access to safe water through the installation of water tanks; and providing tutoring and recreational opportunities.
