Isabel Añorve Lopez is 29 years old and is married to Alberto. They have 3 children, Juan Carlos, Maria and Fernanda, all of whom are in elementary school. Both she and her husband have been working as farmers for the past five years. They grow corn. So far, thanks to her husband's help, they haven't faced any economic problems that they weren't able to work out. They make enough money to cover their basic needs and still have some left to invest in their business.
Isabel is requesting a loan to buy fertilizer for the corn. She is sure that this loan will help her family have a better quality of life. She will also be able to help out her husband with some of their expenses and to pay for their children's education. Isabel's goal is to increase their production and to one day open a grocery store from which to sell their harvests.
The Agriculture business sector covers all farming and livestock activities. Some entrepreneurs request loans to help in securing supplies and equipment. Others want to buy more animals to breed or purchase feed and medicines. The majority of our loan clients live in rural communities where agriculture is already understood as a business model. It is for this reason that approximately 50% of our loans are in the agricultural sector.
The small community of Rio Santa Catarina, which derives its name from a local river, has a mountainous terrain and warm climate. Economic opportunities in this community are diverse as a result of its close proximity to the growing city of Ometepec.
In Rio Santa Catarina, World Vision is assisting farmers with production and marketing; educating families on disaster preparedness; and working to improve education through tutoring and teacher training. We are also providing healthcare services, nutritional training, and housing assistance.
