Rechil's Story

Rechil Duran (framed in the square at far right) dreams of expanding her little store. She has been supplying her neighbors and community with a variety of everyday goods. But her eldest child was not able to go to college. Her family cannot afford the college tuition.

She said to herself, if only she could prosper her livelihood, college education for her children will not be a problem anymore. She would like to ask a loan from World Vision. She intends to buy additional merchandise to offer her customers more selection and variety. In that way, she will be able to earn enough for that tuition.

Rechil is 38 years old and has been married for nearly 20 years already. She has two children. Her eldest child is 18 and eager for college.

Rechil's Community

The community of Mountain View is located in a boot-shaped province on Negros Island in the Philippines. Home to Mt. Kanlaon, an active volcano, the area is rich with natural resources. With convenient access to a variety of markets, the community is emerging as a promising frontier for investors.

Economic activities revolve around agriculture, fishery, and forestry. Environmental degradation is a pressing concern. The region has been identified as one of the lowest income-earning areas in the country. Families struggle to acquire proper nutrients, and some do not have access to clean water. Malnutrition and disease are constant concerns. Families are hindered by poor road conditions, and many children drop out of school.

In Mountain View, World Vision has provided community members with key employment skills, including training in food processing and assistance in livestock rearing. We have also provided medical and housing assistance, supplemental food for malnourished children, fees and materials for children to attend school, and educational support for child laborers.

Rechil's Mid Term Update April 10, 2010

Rechil Duran needed a small amount of money to support her little sari-sari business. With her loan, she was able to buy inventory for her business. She has more displays in her shop now and is able to offer a wider selection of merchandise to her customers.

Rechil is very thankful for the loan and the business it has provided her.

Rechil's Final Update June 19, 2010

Owning a sari-sari store can be a tough business. Rechil used her loan to buy more products to sell. She was earning a profit and meeting her family's daily needs. But some of her customers bought on credit and were not making timely payments to Rechil. That meant Rechil could not make her loan payments.

Despite the fact that World Vision boasts a 98.7% repayment rate, there will always be some loans that do not get fully repaid. While World Vision does everything it can to ensure that this does not happen, it is an unfortunate reality that must be recognized when providing loans to less fortunate populations.

We regret to inform you that Rechil has defaulted on her loan but hope you will continue to support her by praying for her business and family. Once again, thank you for supporting World Vision Micro.
