Shem provides for his family by operating a transportation business in Kisumu, Kenya. He is facing the challenge of rising fuel costs, which cause him to have to raise his fees. It has been difficult to keep his small business sustainable, and Shem is in need of investment capital to expand. This would make his business more profitable and allow Shem to improve living conditions for his family.
Shem is requesting a loan from World Vision so he can purchase another motorcycle. With the additional income he will earn from this improvement, he will be able to provide the daily necessities for his two children. Shem plans to continue to invest in his business. In the future, he hopes to have a large transportation company, providing jobs and a vital service to his community.
In areas where the poor live alongside the more affluent, businesses in the service sector can be very successful. Services include flower cultivation, tailoring/sewing, transportation, repair work, beauty salons and barber shops, and restaurants. Loans are needed to begin, expand, or sustain business with tools and supplies. Loans given to entrepreneurs in the service sector account for around 7% of our loans.
