Justina's Story

Justina started searching for stay-at-home work because she does not want to leave her children alone. She has begun selling silver jewelry, beauty tools, and shoes via catalogs. This work allows her to be with her husband and children.

She needs a loan to invest in shoes and jewelry so her customers can see samples and buy the catalog items.

Her earnings pay for their children's school uniforms, tuition and fees, house expenses, and food.

One dream that Justina has is to buy a car to help expand her work into the nearby communities for a time as their children attend college.

She is native of Jalisco, but she's lived in Tijuana for 12 years.

Justina's Community

Along with the neighboring community of Cañón Del Sainz, Pedregal de Santa Julia is situated in what is referred to as the Frontera Norte region. This area is mountainous and hilly, and families have built their homes directly into the hillside, on the edge of a canyon. As a result, heavy rains often limit transportation and communication. Cold weather poses a serious health risk, compounded by the 45-minute journey to the nearest health center.

Many families run general goods stores or depend on the sale of food or used goods. While these activities once generated sufficient income, the economy is currently struggling. Families live in makeshift homes with floors of dirt or stone. The community is equipped with electricity and running water, but not all homes have access.

In Pedregal de Santa Julia, World Vision is working to improve community health by providing medical examinations and dental treatment; supporting programs that supply regular, nutritious meals to children; organizing community clean-up campaigns; and providing housing materials for the improvement of living spaces. We are also supporting education through scholarships, school supplies, and skills training.

Justina's Mid Term Update May 13, 2010

Mrs. Justina received her loan and invested it in her business. She continues selling items from catalogs and this is a good business for her as it allows her to be near her children.

Please pray for Mrs Justina and her loan group. She has been having some disagreements with the other members of her loan group. This makes her less interested in receiving training and advice from World Vision.

Thank you for investing in Mrs Justina and World Vision Micro.

Justina's Final Update July 08, 2010

Unfortunately, because of the disagreements that Mrs. Justina had with the other members of her loan group, she did not want to continue receiving the training and the advice from World Vision that she needed to get together with her loan.

Another person is in her place now, because she has not wanted to carry out the payments that she left pending.

Despite the fact that World Vision boasts a repayment rate greater than 98%, there will always be some loans that do not get fully repaid. While World Vision does everything it can to ensure that this does not happen, it is an unfortunate reality that must be recognized when providing loans to less fortunate populations.

We hope you that you will continue to praying for Mrs. Justina and family. Once again, thank you for supporting World Vision Micro!
