Pierre Byiringiro lives in Maraba, Rwanda and he has owned a store where he sells a variety of goods. He would like to expand his shop until he is financially stable.
With his loan money he will purchase a variety of goods to increase his profitability. He is glad to be able to provide his community with his goods at a reasonable price. The additional money he earns will provide his family with their basic needs.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
The community of Maraba is situated in a chain of high mountains in southern Rwanda, along a highway leading to Rusizi district. Most families depend on agriculture for income, though production is low as a result of poor farming techniques. Food shortages and malnutrition are constant concerns. The region is home to three trading centers, and arts and crafts are increasing economic opportunities.
The community’s 13 primary schools struggle with overcrowding and a lack of resources. Dropout rates are high. The region is home to only one health center, and knowledge of preventive health practices is low. Common diseases include malaria, HIV and AIDS, respiratory infections, and waterborne diseases. Fewer than one-third of residents have access to clean, drinkable water.
In Maraba, World Vision is working to improve incomes and food security by providing agricultural assistance and training. We are also helping to ensure maintenance of educational facilities, with the overall goal of increasing school enrollment.
Pierre used the loan he received to expand his store. He purchased a variety of items such as soap, body lotion, powders, etc.
Pierre hasn't been able to keep up with the repayment terms because some of his goods were stolen, however he is trying to keep up with them.

Pierre has now repaid his loan in full. In addition to repaying his loan, Pierre has used his additional income to purchase food for the family and provide healthcare.
The loan Pierre received helped his business expand and the profits he is now earning create lasting improvements in his life. In the future Pierre hopes to add employees and expand the current business and take out another loan.
Pierre struggled with the original repayment terms because some of his goods were stolen. However, we worked together with him because it is important to him that he act as a proper businessman and repay his loan. We restructured the loan and he has now repaid it!
