Rosa is a farmer who lives in the town of Mabinay, Negros Oriental. She has four children, but only the youngest still lives with her. Rosa works in the field planting sugar cane, while also raising hogs, to support her family. She dreams of improving her business so that her nine-year-old son, Heinz, can continue attending school.
With a World Vision loan Rosa will be able to expand her business by buying fertilizer for her farm as well as more piglets to raise. This will allow her to increase her income, which she plans to use for her child's schooling, the family's daily consumption, reinvestment in her business, and savings.
The Agriculture business sector covers all farming and livestock activities. Some entrepreneurs request loans to help in securing supplies and equipment. Others want to buy more animals to breed or purchase feed and medicines. The majority of our loan clients live in rural communities where agriculture is already understood as a business model. It is for this reason that approximately 50% of our loans are in the agricultural sector.
The community of Mountain View is located in a boot-shaped province on Negros Island in the Philippines. Home to Mt. Kanlaon, an active volcano, the area is rich with natural resources. With convenient access to a variety of markets, the community is emerging as a promising frontier for investors.
Economic activities revolve around agriculture, fishery, and forestry. Environmental degradation is a pressing concern. The region has been identified as one of the lowest income-earning areas in the country. Families struggle to acquire proper nutrients, and some do not have access to clean water. Malnutrition and disease are constant concerns. Families are hindered by poor road conditions, and many children drop out of school.
In Mountain View, World Vision has provided community members with key employment skills, including training in food processing and assistance in livestock rearing. We have also provided medical and housing assistance, supplemental food for malnourished children, fees and materials for children to attend school, and educational support for child laborers.
Thank you for supporting a small business loan for Rosa Esmille to expand her farming and livestock business. After receiving the loan from World Vision, she invested the $250 to buy piglets and fertilizer. Rosa has been repaying her loan on time with her new profits. She makes weekly payments of $15.
In addition to repaying her loan, Rosa is using additional income to pay school fees, purchase food for the family and expand the current business. Rosa's 4 children continue to study in school.
