Asnakech, mother of one, lives and works in Damota, Ethiopia as hair stylist. She would like to improve her business by opening another salon but has not had the money to do so. As she explains, “I have found my beauty salon very interesting. I know that when my business grows, my income also increases and I can improve my life."
A loan from World Vision will enable to Asnakech to open another shop. Her new income will allow her to better provide for her family and ensure her child receives an education. She continued saying, "As things improve, I hope to take on assistants and create jobs for other people in my community."
In areas where the poor live alongside the more affluent, businesses in the service sector can be very successful. Services include flower cultivation, tailoring/sewing, transportation, repair work, beauty salons and barber shops, and restaurants. Loans are needed to begin, expand, or sustain business with tools and supplies. Loans given to entrepreneurs in the service sector account for around 7% of our loans.
