Maria, 18, runs a grocery store in the sugar-cane growing community of Corrales, Mexico. Her parents opened the store in their home six years ago. The store grew little by little, and Maria now runs it on her own.
Maria was not able to finish school, and she is happy to run her own business. She wakes up every day to open the store at 8 a.m., and she doesn’t close until the last customer is gone. Thanks to her family’s support and teamwork, Maria has a successful business which has helped the whole family to buy essential goods.
A loan from World Vision will allow her to increase her inventory of items such as beans, rice, cooking oil, flour, mixes, table salt, sugar, cookies, candy, soda, tomatoes, chilies, onions, canned food, toilet paper and soap. She wants to have enough merchandise on hand so people can easily find and buy what they need.
Maria wants to continue investing in her business because it is profitable and allows her to have steady work without needing to move away. She also will use her increased income to help cover her family’s expenses.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
