Industry Info

The Agriculture business sector covers all farming and livestock activities. Some entrepreneurs request loans to help in securing supplies and equipment. Others want to buy more animals to breed or purchase feed and medicines. The majority of our loan clients live in rural communities where agriculture is already understood as a business model. It is for this reason that approximately 50% of our loans are in the agricultural sector.

Maria Paula's Community

Home to a primarily ethnic Mazahua population, the community of Najhé is located in a mountainous region in northeastern Mexico State. The climate is sub-humid, but temperatures are typically cool due to the region’s high elevation. Windstorms are common during the early spring, followed by heavy rains in the summer and frost in the winter.

Women in Najhé continue to wear typical Mazahua dress, and some community members uphold traditional artisan practices, producing pottery, woodwork, and crafts made of wool. The primary economic activity is agriculture. Squash, beans, and fruit are grown for consumption, while corn is grown both to eat and to sell.

World Vision’s work in Najhé includes agricultural assistance to improve nutrition and family incomes; vocational training and tutoring sessions; and self-esteem workshops. We are also working to improve health conditions by training volunteers who can educate community members and by providing housing materials that will contribute to better living environments.

Maria Paula's Mid Term Update November 13, 2010

Mrs. Paula used the loan to purchase corn and feed for her pigs. She is feeding the animals because she wants to fatten them and to breed them, and in that way she will have more animals.

She is working hard and is earning profits with her business. She also has chickens and turkeys, and she uses those profits for her business and household expenses.

She has never been in arrears and is paying very well. She says that it is a bit difficult with the group, but that they are working together.

Mrs. Paula always had the goal of having something of her own, and now she does. She does not struggle as she did in the past, when she didn't have animals to generate the income for her expenses.

She is grateful for the loan because it has been very helpful, and it has given her the opportunity to get ahead. She hopes that the interest rate might go even lower so that she can continue with this project. She is very happy because she received this support.

Maria Paula's Final Update January 08, 2011

Maria Paula

Mrs. Paula's business has improved, because now the grown pigs have multiplied so she has new little pigs. She sells the litters because right now, she does not have enough feed for the little ones. But she does keep a pair of pigs to breed, so that she can continue with this activity.

Her life changed ever since she started breeding animals, and now she has profits that she can use to help her husband. Also, most of her children are married. However, there are still expenses that she needs to cover.

Every week she has money generated from the profits to pay the loan. She knows it is her responsibility, and that no one else in the group can pay for her. Mrs. Paula knows that she invested this money and that she has to generate profits from it.

She is very grateful for the loan she received, because it is an opportunity that she took in order to keep her business going without paying high interests. She says that when someone needs a loan, they always pay almost double the amount due to high rates of interest. She thinks the interest rate here is low.

Breeding sheep generates good profits if she dedicates time to it. She has to dedicate time and money to the business, because if you don't or you don't know how, you will lose time and money. She wants to have a larger number of pigs in order to sell them and earn more income.

Mrs. Paula has repaid her loan in full. These loan funds are now available to help another worthy entrepreneur in her community. Thank you for supporting Mrs. Paula and World Vision Micro!
