Adriana's Story

Adriana Reyes has a small basic store and a telephone service. She sells products like sugar, flour, detergent, etc. and with this business she helps her husband to give a better life to their daughters Daniela and Salma.

Mrs Reyes worries for her clients and for this reason she needs a loan to provide more variety and to improve her telephone service.

Industry Info

In areas where the poor live alongside the more affluent, businesses in the service sector can be very successful. Services include flower cultivation, tailoring/sewing, transportation, repair work, beauty salons and barber shops, and restaurants. Loans are needed to begin, expand, or sustain business with tools and supplies. Loans given to entrepreneurs in the service sector account for around 7% of our loans.

Adriana's Community

The community of Vincente Camalote is located in the state of Oaxaca, about two hours from the city of Tierra Blanca. The climate is warm and the landscape is lush and green. Many residents participate in agriculture, primarily harvesting sugar cane. Other economic activities include commerce and fishing.

World Vision is working to improve the health of families in Vincente Camalote by providing housing materials for the improvement of living spaces; restoring water tanks for access to clean water; and supporting medical treatment and HIV- and AIDS-awareness campaigns. We are also supporting education by training teachers and tutors and providing spiritual-formation workshops for teens.

Adriana's Mid Term Update February 24, 2010

We apologize for the delay in your promised mid-term report. When we reviewed the repayment status of your loan, it became apparent that your mid-term report had somehow slipped through the cracks. While World Vision has been giving microloans to the enterprising poor for over 20 years, Micro is a brand-new program. Adriana is very happy with the success of her business. Because she had enough money, she was able to invest in her business, purchasing soap, pasta, sugar, beans, oil, and eggs.

Adriana paid back her loan. Now, she hopes that her basic store continues to improve and thrive so she can provide a better life for her children.
