Her business will benefit the community because she will be selling the animals to her people, and in return, she will be buying the food for her children. Maria Trinidad's Community

Home to a primarily ethnic Mazahua population, the community of Najhé is located in a mountainous region in northeastern Mexico State. The climate is sub-humid, but temperatures are typically cool due to the region’s high elevation. Windstorms are common during the early spring, followed by heavy rains in the summer and frost in the winter.

Women in Najhé continue to wear typical Mazahua dress, and some community members uphold traditional artisan practices, producing pottery, woodwork, and crafts made of wool. The primary economic activity is agriculture. Squash, beans, and fruit are grown for consumption, while corn is grown both to eat and to sell.

World Vision’s work in Najhé includes agricultural assistance to improve nutrition and family incomes; vocational training and tutoring sessions; and self-esteem workshops. We are also working to improve health conditions by training volunteers who can educate community members and by providing housing materials that will contribute to better living environments.

Maria Trinidad's Mid Term Update July 04, 2010

Maria Trinidad

Maria used her loan to purchase more animals and care for them. She bought 24 little turkeys to raise and fatten. In addition, she bought corn to feed to her animals. She has to buy corn because she does not plant corn like some other farmers do. Furthermore, Maria purchased more land for her sheep.

Maria states that her businesses are doing well and that her turkey sales are increasing. She has also been able to pay her debts and help her husband with the household expenses. In addition, she has been able to purchase clothes, shoes, and pay for schooling expenses. By providing for their basic needs, their lives have improved.

One of her goals is to make a better pen for her sheep so they have their own space and stay healthy. With the change of climate, especially when it is cold, rains, or really hot, Maria wants to keep them covered so they stay safe and healthy. Maria says, “I am thankful for this loan, because it has helped me so much. My life has improved. Thank you very much.” Thank you for supporting Maria and World Vision Micro!

Maria Trinidad's Final Update August 29, 2010

Maria Trinidad

Maria has been able to build the small kitchen that she needed thanks to the loan, and to the fact that her animals have grown. She says that it’s very helpful to have animals because, if you sell one you can immediately have money for that day’s household expenses, or you slaughter a chicken and have dinner that night. So she’s happy that she has been able to buy more animals and that now she has the resources to buy maize to feed them.

Maria says that her life and the lives of her family have improved because she used to have to cook outside in the open air. There was a drain close by and it was very unhealthy because the air carried many diseases. Now she says; “I have my little kitchen where I can cook for my daughters, and even though I still have to finish it, at least I have a place to cook.”

Maria was able to pay the loan in full. She’s very grateful to World Vision for the trust that they’ve demonstrated in her. She hopes that she can continue getting this support because she wants to have more animals to have an income, and she wants her daughters to continue going to high school.
