Karen (20) lives at home with her parents in the city of San Juan. To help her parents, who have been very supportive of her, and to earn a living, five months ago she started her own snack stand. She prepares a variety of snack foods to sell. Karen is really pleased with how her business is operating and she wants to improve it. She'd like to buy a sandwich maker, a blender to prepare "esquimos" (milkshakes), and a grill, but she has not had the money.
With a loan from World Vision, Karen will be able to make those purchases and grow her business. The money she earns will allow her to care for parents, and enable her to continue to invest in her snack stand.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies. Loans in the commerce sector account for around 33% of our loans.
The small community of Rio Santa Catarina, which derives its name from a local river, has a mountainous terrain and warm climate. Economic opportunities in this community are diverse as a result of its close proximity to the growing city of Ometepec.
