Maria Magdalena lives in a small community in the state of Oaxaca called Ometepec, meaning “place between two hills.” In this area there is a lot more than meets the eye. Its people come from a native group called “Amuzgos,” which means “place where there are libraries,” perhaps because of the features of sensitivity and wisdom of the inhabitants. Their eternal principle is to keep a balance between society and nature. For instance, they continue creating their typical embroidered clothing, which is also embellished with a natural dye. When they come down to the reefs in the ocean, they gently extract the color of the winkles and put the little animal back into the sea.
Maria Magdalena lives in this beautiful place with her husband Luis Miguel, an electrician, and their two children: Pablo and Roberto. Four years ago, she began selling typical Mexican snacks because she wanted to provide her family with better living conditions. So far, Magda (as the people call her) has never faced any trouble in her business or personal life that she couldn't handle and has been able to buy the most necessary goods.
Though her business is doing well, Magda would like to expand and improve it but lacks the financial capital to do so. With a loan from World Vision she will be able to buy more ingredients for cooking, including tomatoes, chili, onions, potatoes, lettuce, maize, cheese, sour cream, cooking oil, table salt, rice and beans. With the additional profits she will be able to better provide for the needs of her family and reinvest in her business.
Magda's greatest goal is to have her own restaurant someday in order to offer more snacks and dishes to her clients and to increase her customer base.
Retail is a quick and scalable way to begin earning a profit. Many entrepreneurs begin with stalls at markets or even at home and need a loan to expand or increase their inventory. Others may be ready to open a small store. Goods purchased from loan funds range from clothing, grocery or sundry items to jewelry, candy, perfume or health and beauty supplies.
