Hugo is from Mexico. He has 2 children. He needs a loan of $825 to purchase more fruits and vegetables to sell.
Mr. Hugo is 25 years old, and he’s from San Felipe de los Alzati, a very nice and quaint community where the main income generating activity is the traditional craftwork. This place is close to a monarch butterfly sanctuary.
Mr. Hugo has stands to sell fruits and vegetables in the street markets of different communities. He says that he asked for the loan to buy “ jitomate”, “chiles”, onions, apples, “papayas”, “plátanos”, watermelons, etc. He’s been working in this type of business for about five years. He began by selling potatoes, and then he went to work with his sister. He had to establish his own business, though, because the money that he was making with her was not enough to support his family once he got married. He says that what the little profits he was making, he was saving and buying more products.
He buys his merchandise at the central market of Toluca, in the state of México, since that’s where he gets the best prices and where he generates higher profits. On Saturdays, he buys what he needs, and during the week he works in the different street markets. He’s very happy with the loan and with the trust that the Foundation has demonstrated in him.
Mr. Hugo says that he’s worried because the truck that he uses to transport his merchandise has not been running properly, and he hopes that it won’t break down because it would be very difficult to continue selling the fruits and vegetables and he would lose his profits. Another one of his concerns is the condition of his house since it is made of adobe and tin, and when it rains, water comes in. Besides, he spends a lot of money on his children’s diapers and milk because they are very young.
Mr. Hugo has been married for four years to Mrs. Juana Miguel. They have two children who are 1 and 2 years old.
One of his goals is to buy a semi-new truck. Another one is to make his avocado garden grow. He understands that making this business work is a long term goal, but he knows that once he’s able to start, he’ll generate good profits. In the future he wants to buy peach trees.
He says that the loan will help him a lot to cover his home and business expenses.
