Microfinance is clearly a key tool in World Vision’s battle against poverty. However, it can be less clear how microloans fit in with World Vision’s organizational vision as our microfinance beneficiaries are adults rather than their children.
In fact, many of World Vision’s interventions are targeted at parents, rather than their children. Empowering parents to care for their children helps create lasting change. Microfinance loans help mothers and fathers grow their businesses to the point where they can support themselves and their families. World Vision can move on to the next needy community knowing that through microfinance and our other programs we’ve left behind a healthy, educated population AND an economic engine to sustain the change.
World Vision’s child-focus is one of the reasons we specifically target women with our micro loans. Women reinvest 90% of their income in their families and communities, compared with men who reinvest only 30% to 40% (World Bank).
And because child well-being is our ultimate focus, we always track the number of children whose lives are impacted by our microloans. That’s why I’m thrilled to know that, through Micro, you have not only helped over 1,600 entrepreneurs. Through our micro loans, you’ve improved the lives of 6,720 children!
